During his residency training and as an attending in San Francisco, Dr. Stu Silverstein performed Standup Comedy professionally. Few people knew of his Medical background and he drew a following and was booked regularly at San Francisco comedy clubs. Soon, Dr. Silverstein was opening for nationally known comedians including Dave Feldman (Staff writer for Dennis Miller), the late Pat Paulsen, and even Robin Williams at the famed Holy City Zoo. He even placed 1st in 2 competitions among a field of national headliner comedians. Word leaked out about the comedian that was also a Physician as a local and national press following developed, including World News Tonight with Peter Jennings. Peter Jennings said, “In the latter part of the Century, Sir William Osler was one of the very first to recognize the importance of bedside manner, including the healing power of humor. I suspect he would approve of Dr. Stu Silverstein.”
Requests to give humorous presentations at Medical Society Meetings and Conferences across the country came in. Dr. Silverstein has been giving his “Humor in Medicine??? You Must Be Joking!” presentation as requests continue to pour in this day.
Dr. Silverstein has and is currently working with fellow Physician/Comedian Neil Shulman, MD who was the author of the book Doc Hollywood, upon which the Warner Brothers feature film of the same name was based.
“Laughing Your Way to Passing the Pediatric Boards”, is the culmination of Dr. Silverstein’s mission to combine his well honed Standup Comedy skills with making board preparation more enjoyable and less of a chore. Dr. Silverstein has been on faculty with the Osler Institute Board Review Course as well as the UCLA Pediatric Board Review course. Currently, Dr. Silverstein is concentrating on future study aids and new materials to help you, our medical students, prepare for your board exams.
